What are Nipple Shields?

Nipple shields can help protect your nipples while still allowing breastfeeding. Made from soft, ultra-thin silicone, they are gentle enough for sensitive, dry, or cracked skin. Sore or cracked nipples can result from various causes, so you may want to also seek additional lactation support. 

A nipple shield is a soft, flexible silicone cover that is placed over the nipple before breastfeeding to provide protection.

It has small holes at the tip, allowing milk to flow through to your baby.

Some mothers may be concerned that using a 'barrier' between them and their baby could affect the bonding experience during breastfeeding.

Why would I use Nipple Shields?

What is a Weaning System for Nipple Shields?

When your feeding routine is established, the baby’s sucking becomes stronger and you become more comfortable with breastfeeding, you may not want to stop using the Nipple Shields.

However, some mothers may find it inconvenient to continue using the Nipple Shields for a few reasons, such as, always being reliant on carrying them around with you, having to constantly clean them.

Hence, we at AuraLai, have designed a step by step weaning system to comfortably allow your baby to go back to breast.  Use the open top nipple shields to get back to feeding straight from the nipple. Two sizes to gradually reintroduce the nipple. 

1) Place the highest open top nipple shield over the nipple before breastfeeding. It is open top to allow milk to flow through to your baby. The nipple is mostly still covered to give a gradual introduction to the new flow of the milk and the new sensation of the nipple.

2) Once feeding is established, place the lowest open top nipple shield over the nipple before breastfeeding. It is open top to allow milk to flow through to your baby. The nipple is less covered by the silicon cover to give a greater feel to the sensation of the nipple.

When to use the Weaning System?

These are the primary situations where using AuraLai's weaning system might be helpful

• If your baby wants a faster flow of milk.

• If you are tired of carrying the shields around.

• If you are tired of cleaning shields.

• If your baby has established feeding (we suggest to start weaning at around 3-4 months of age).

Can you use Nipple Shields for Sore Nipples?

A flat or inverted nipple might not touch the roof of your baby’s mouth during feeding, which can hinder her sucking reflex. Additionally, since they areflavor-free, your baby is unlikely to detect any unusual taste while using them.

Can you use nipple shields to help your baby latch on?

A nipple shield can provide a larger, firmer surface for a baby who is having trouble latching. A lactation  specialist can help ensure that your baby is latching effectively whilst using the shield. It’s also important to track your baby’s weight gain to confirm that your milk supply is meeting their nutritional needs.

What happens if my baby doesn’t adjust to the weaning system to begin with? 

If the baby gets frustrated, it’s okay to go back to the nipple shield. Try again in another feeding session when baby is calm. It might take a couple of tries. We recommend to start weaning when the baby is between 3-4 months old.

Does the effectiveness of silver cups diminish over time?

No, the effectiveness of silver cups remains the same, no matter how long you use them! You can save and use your silver cups for each of your breastfeeding journeys.

Instructions For Use

Clean and Prepare
Before using the cups, make sure they’re clean. Wash them with warm water to remove any residue.

Apply Breast Milk (Optional)
For added healing, place a few drops of breast milk inside each cup. The natural enzymes in breast milk can help soothe and promote healing.

Place the Cups
Position the cups directly over your nipples, with the rounded side facing outward. The cups should fit snugly but comfortably, conforming to the shape of your areola and nipple.

Wear Between Feeds
Keep the silver cups on between breastfeeding or pumping sessions. They help protect and soothe your nipples, reducing irritation and preventing friction from clothing.

Remove Before Feeding
Always remove the cups before you begin breastfeeding to ensure a proper latch.

Clean After Use
After each use, clean the cups with warm water. You can use baking soda and vinegar to maintain their shine. Let them dry completely before storing.

Reapply as Needed
Wear the cups as often as necessary between feeds, especially if you experience soreness or cracked nipples.

Warnings For Using Silver Cups

Remove Before Breastfeeding
Always remove the silver cups before breastfeeding to avoid interference with your baby's latch and feeding.

Avoid Using with Other Products
Do not apply nipple creams, lotions, or ointments while using the cups. These products may reduce the effectiveness of the silver cups or cause unwanted reactions.

Check for Discomfort
If you experience any discomfort, redness, or irritation while wearing the cups, remove them immediately. Prolonged discomfort could signal that the cups are not fitting properly.

Clean Regularly
Regularly clean the cups with warm water and mild soap. Dirty cups can harbor bacteria, leading to infections or further irritation.

Do Not Use If Allergic to Silver
If you are allergic to silver or experience an adverse reaction, discontinue use and consult with your healthcare provider.

Store Properly
When not in use, store the cups in a dry, clean place to avoid damage or contamination.

Consult Your Doctor
If you have a history of nipple infections, cracks, or severe breastfeeding issues, it’s best to consult your doctor before using the cups to ensure they are appropriate for your specific needs.

Cleaning Instructions

Rinse daily with warm water to remove milk residue. To maintain their shine, make a paste with baking soda and a little water, gently rub it onto the cups, then rinse well and dry completely.
